These nanofibers can be examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and AFM. Peptide samples in aqueous solution during environmental AFM examination showed the same nanofiber results (Inset), suggesting that the nanofiber formation is independent of air-drying process. The nanofiber images are not as sharp as the ones dried on mica, likely because of the hydration of these nanofibers in solution.
Fig. 7. The experimental design. Schematic illustration of sample preparation method for AFM reassembly observation. Aliquots taken from solution were deposited on mica substrates at different times after sonication of the solution. Preparation process takes ~1 min per sample. The four repeated times of entire reassembly experiments were carried out from a single sample tube to be consistent. Experiments from different tubes of peptides produced the same results.
