Appendix 2. Experimental questions in Experiment 1

(The questions appeared in randomized order.)

1. Should Israel negotiate with the Hamas government (the scale ranged from 1, in all circumstances, to 9, under no circumstances).

2. Do you support the construction of the Separation Wall on the border line of June 4, 1967 (the scale ranged from 1, not at all, to 9, strongly support). (It should be noted that, in the context of this debate, the alternative that immediately comes to mind is to build the wall deeper in the West Bank.)

3. Do you support the formation of a Palestinian state? (The scale ranged from 1, strongly, to 9, not at all.)

4. At present, there are over 100 roadblocks in the West Bank. These roadblocks cut through Palestinian territories. In your view, should the Israeli government reduce the number of roadblocks? (The scale ranged from 1, all roadblocks should be removed, to 9, no changes are required.)

5. The U.S. defense minister suggested recently that the U.S. government is considering compensating Palestinian merchants in the market of Hebron, whose shops were closed by the Israeli Army. To what extent should the merchants be compensated? (The scale ranged from 1, not at all, to 9, fully.)

6. The U.S. defense minister suggested recently that the U.S. government is considering compensating Palestinian merchants in the market of Hebron, whose shops were closed by the Israeli Army. Do you think Israel should take part of this initiative? (The scale ranged from 1, definitely not, to 9, Israel should fully compensate the merchants.)

7. The Guardian recently ran an article that suggested the European Football Association is considering a proposal to include a Palestinian team in the next round of games. Do you think this proposal should be accepted? (The scale ran from 1, certainly not, to 9, absolutely yes.)

8. Recently, the Palestinian government asked the World Bank for permission to issue their own currency. Do you think this request should be granted? (The scale ranged from 1, certainly not, to 9, absolutely yes.)

9. Do you support the government's disengagement plan? (The scale ranged from 1, not at all, to 9, very much so.)

10. The newspaper Yedioth Aharonoth published an article about the Natsha family. Three generations of this family live in one building in Jenin. Recently, and in complete opposition to the family's stance and to the explicit request of the father, one of the boys became a member of Hamas. As a reaction to one of the latest Hamas-led suicide attacks, the Israeli Army announced that it will demolish the house. How justified is this decision? (The scale ranged from 1, justified, to 9, not at all.)

11. When Souhilla was 12, she was caught throwing stones at Israeli soldiers. Today she is 23, a central activist in an organization that promotes Israeli-Palestinian coexistence. Her organization holds some of its activity in the campus of Tel Aviv University (TAU). A search that was recently conducted in a Nablus house yielded a picture of an 18-year-old Souhilla with one of the leaders of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. This picture led TAU authorities to ban her from entering the campus. How justified is this decision? (The scale ranged from 1, not at all, to 9, very much.)

Appendix 3. Experimental Question in Experiment 2

(The questions appeared in randomized order.)

1. To what extent do settlers pose a threat to Israel's democratic nature? (The scale ranged from 1, not at all, to 9, severe threat.)

2. The Klein family (father, mother, and five children) just moved to Neve Dkalim (a Jewish settlement in the Gaza strip) to express support for the settlers. When you think about the children of this family, this move seems ... (The scale ranged from 1, completely unfair, to 9, completely fair.)

3. To what degree do the settlers in Gush Katif (a Jewish settlement in the Gaza strip) represent the core ideals of Zionism?

4. How homogeneous is the population of the West Bank settlers? (The scale ranged from 1, not at all, to 9, very much so.)

5. How will you feel on the day of the withdrawal from Gaza? (The scale ranged from 1, relatively sad, to 9, relatively happy.)

6. Do you think that public workplaces should implement affirmative action policies regarding settlers who will be evacuated from Gaza? (The scale ranged from 1, not at all, to 9, very much so.).
