Cover image: Atomic force microscopy image of calcium oxalate monohydrate, the inorganic component of kidney stones. Addition of the anion citrate or the small protein osteopontin causes asymmetric growth of the crystal. These data shed light on the poorly understood molecular mechanism of biomineralization.
