Movie 1. The diffusion-reaction is turned off in this simulation showing an unrealistic case with no oxygen gradients. This simulation demonstrates the advantage of EPS- strategy in direct competition with EPS+ in the unrealistic case in which oxygen concentrations are constant throughout the whole biofilm, and it stresses the importance of the naturally occurring gradients in biofilm development.
