Odor avoidance was assayed as the proportion of flies moving away from an odorant when given a choice between the odorant and air. Octanol was avoided more strongly than MCH (mean avoidance index 0.86 versus 0.83, F1,95 = 10.2, P = 0.002), but there were no significant differences among lines (F9,95 = 1.2, P = 0.31) and no line ´ odor interaction (F9,95 = 1.6, P = 0.10). n = 6 per strain and odorant.
