Cover image: Scanning electron micrograph of calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) crystals. COM crystals are the major component of most kidney stones. Aggregation of COM crystals is thought to be promoted by urinary species that form adhesive bridges between crystal surfaces, and the attachment of these aggregates to epithelial cells involves adhesive contacts with COM crystal surfaces. Force measurements reveal that different crystal faces of COM have distinct adhesion characteristics. See the article by Sheng et al. on pages 267–272. Image courtesy of Xiaoxia Sheng.
