Cover image: Antibodies for the human orthologue of MATE1 (hMATE1) predominantly immunostained the apical regions of the proximal and distal convoluted tubules of the kidney. MATE1 is the first mammalian orthologue of the multidrug and toxin extrusion (MATE) family, conferring multidrug resistance to bacteria. hMATE1 mediates the final excretion step for toxic organic cations in the kidney and liver through an H+-coupled antiport mechanism.
