| Media Information for Authors When a paper is accepted for publication, it is under embargo and not for public release before 5:00 PM Eastern time, the Monday before publication. Authors may talk with the press about their work but should coordinate this with the PNAS News Office so that reporters are aware of PNAS policy. Reporters must understand that papers are under embargo until the week of publication. If you plan to present your embargoed paper at a conference prior to publication, please contact the PNAS News Office immediately at 202-334-1310, or PNASnews{at}nas.edu. |

Purpose Every week, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) sends out a "tipsheet" alerting eligible members of the media to forthcoming articles that might be of special interest. In addition, PNAS makes the full text of all articles available in advance of publication. Distribution and use of advance materials from PNAS is controlled by the embargo policy. This policy is designed to provide news reporters an opportunity to write accurate news stories while ensuring that publicity does not appear prematurely. Through consistent implementation of our embargo policy, we work to maintain a fair and level playing field that gives no one reporter or organization an advantage over others.

Daily Online Publication and Embargo Dates PNAS publishes new content daily online. Daily publication increases the time savings over print, by allowing accepted papers to be published online as soon as final author corrections are made. The weekly PNAS tipsheet and postings to Eurekalert! include all articles that will publish online during the following week. Unless otherwise stated, PNAS applies a Monday 5:00 PM U.S. Eastern time embargo to all articles, regardless of which day of the week the article actually publishes. For example, PNAS articles posted to Eurekalert! on Wednesday, August 15, are under embargo until Monday, August 20, 5:00 PM U.S. Eastern time, and will publish online between Monday, August 20 and Friday, August 24. Exact publication dates are not scheduled in advance. |

Services for Public
Information Officers (PIOs)
PNAS welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with public information officers (PIOs) from institutions of authors publishing in the journal. To assist PIOs in identifying and promoting authors, PNAS offers a PIO resource page on the EurekAlert! website. Contents include 1) A list of author affiliations from recently accepted manuscripts that do not have a publication date set and 2) A list of author affiliations from articles scheduled for publication the following week. Preprints of articles scheduled for publication are available for download from the website. The PIO resource page is updated every Wednesday. PIOs must register with EurekAlert! in order to access the page. Registered PIOs will automatically receive e-mail notification when articles from their institution are scheduled for publication. PNAS notifies PIOs directly when articles from their affiliated institutions are determined to be of particular media interest. PIOs are notified as soon as the article is selected for press interest, and again when the exact date of publication is known. PIOs who plan to promote an upcoming PNAS paper are asked to notify PNAS in advance. |
