About Track II – Direct Manuscript Submission |
||
| Manuscripts
may be submitted directly to the PNAS Editorial Office — authors
no longer need to first obtain an Academy Member's agreement to communicate
their paper to PNAS. This submission route is called Track II (direct manuscript
submission). Track II papers account for more than 80% of papers submitted
and 40% of papers published in PNAS. It's the quick and easy way to publish
in the world's premier multidisciplinary journal.
When a Track II paper is submitted, the PNAS Editorial Board identifies an Academy Member expert in the field of research described in the paper to serve as editor. The Member editor may choose reviewers, guide modifications and revisions to the text, and decide whether the paper should be recommended for publication. The Editorial Board may accept the paper for publication in PNAS, all within the space of a few weeks. The Board reserves the right to reject manuscripts without further review or subject manuscripts to review and reject those that do not meet the standards of the journal. Once the paper is accepted, publication is rapid, taking 7 weeks on average to print publication. Track II papers are identified in the journal in two places: (i) Below the author affiliation line on the title page, Track I, II, and III papers are distinguished respectively as "Communicated by," "Edited by," or "Contributed by" the responsible Member. (ii) Track II papers have an additional identifying footnote.

Online Submission of Manuscripts PNAS requires Track II authors and strongly encourages all authors to submit digital files of their research papers (including supporting information) online via the Web at www.PNAScentral.org. The PNAS sizing worksheet is available online as an interactive form to aid in calculating the character count. This system expedites the submission and review process for Track II papers and speeds the processing of all articles. It reduces the burden on authors of preparing and mailing print copies of their manuscripts and figures. Associated mailing delays and costs are also eliminated. We encourage all authors to provide feedback on the submission process. Paper Submission Authors with unusual circumstances who are unable to submit electronically should contact PNAS at pnas{at}nas.edu.
