Cover image: Pictured is a flying male dragonfly (Anax parthenope). In dragonflies, as in diverse animals with color vision, opsin receptors contribute to visual pigments in photoreceptor cells. Ryo Futahashi et al. demonstrate that dragonflies, which are strongly dependent on color vision, possess a large number of opsin genes, with 33 genes identified in A. parthenope. Opsin genes are differentially expressed between adults and larvae as well as between dorsal and ventral regions of adult compound eyes, likely underpinning the dragonflies' behavioral and ecological adaptations to the aquatic lifestyle of larvae and the aerial lifestyle of adults.
