B. mallei ATCC 23344 Strain History.

B. mallei ATCC 23344 was isolated in December 1944 from postmortem cultures of knee fluid, skin pustules, and blood of a Chinese soldier who died of a glanders-melioidosis type of infection in Burma. This strain has been referred to in the literature by several other names, including NBL 7, China 7, 3873, EY 2233, and RH 627 (1-3).

B. mallei Isolates and Construction of virG Insertion Mutant.

The origins of the strains in Fig. 2 are the American Type Culture Collection and the National Collection of Type Cultures, London.

The virG mutant was constructed by inserting the following internal virG gene fragment into the suicide vector pGSV3. This construct was mobilized into ATCC 23344 via conjugation to make a merodiploid strain.
