  • Two hypotheses are tested: (i) HSYN, synonymous rates do not differ and (ii) HNONSYN, nonsynonymous rates do not differ. χ2 tests(1 df) indicated rejection of the hypotheses as follows: *, α = 0.05; **, α = 0.01; and ***, α = 0.005. Because multiple tests were performed, tests were considered significant when χ2 exceeded test statistic at α = 0.01 (**). Species are arranged in order of total branch length, largest to smallest (Fig. 3).
