Subscription Types
What can I access as a subscriber? How can I access content?
Active subscribers can access all published content, including the full text of any published article (whether HTML or PDF format). Individual subscribers and NAS members have access via username and password from any device connected to the Internet. Institutional subscribers have access via IP authentication with an institutional site license.
How do I purchase a new individual subscription?
Complete the Subscription Order Form and submit with your payment (refer to the form for details). Pay by personal check, money order, or credit card, and state that your subscription is for personal use only. Upon receipt of payment, you will receive an email with an access code and instructions for creating a username and password. Please note that individual subscriptions may not be used for a library.
How do I purchase a new institutional subscription?
Visit our contact section and query the agent in your region for more information. If you are within the United States or your region is not represented by any agent within our contact section, please contact PNAS directly to determine appropriate pricing.
After pricing has been determined, send payment to PNAS by check, credit card, money order, or bank draft. Upon receipt of payment, you will receive an email with an access code and instructions to activate your subscription online. Institutions must provide the following to complete activation:
- The institution's IP addresses
- The name, title, phone, fax, and email of the contact person for the subscription
Payment can be accepted through subscription agents, but online activation must be completed directly by the subscriber.
"Authorized users" are authenticated, current, full- and part-time students, employees (including faculty, staff, affiliated researchers, independent contractors, and walk-in users), and other individuals who have legal access to the subscriber's facilities and computer network. Remote access is allowable for authorized users only if they are authenticated through a secure network. Open proxies and other nonauthenticated proxy servers are prohibited.
An "institution" is all parts of an organization that report to the same Chief Academic Officer or Chief Executive Officer. For multicampus academic institutions, each organization listed in the Directory of Higher Education is a separate institution, and requires its own site license. Academic law libraries and academic medical libraries are considered part of a university and are part of an institution only if they report to the same institutional Chief Academic Officer.
Can my institution subscribe for both print issues and online access?
PNAS subscriptions are now online-only. However, individual print-on-demand issues from volumes 115 to present are available for purchase here (issue copies printed prior to volume 115 are no longer available). Prices vary between print issues and do not include shipping costs. Please note that, due to the print-on-demand nature of the products, PNAS cannot issue refunds or exchanges if customers order the wrong product.
Do you offer a student/postdoc subscription?
No.
Are single copies of articles available for purchase?
Nonsubscribers may purchase access to a single article ($10) using a credit card. Once you have selected an article you wish to access, a menu will appear on screen with ordering details.

Subscription Access and Management
How do I activate a new subscription?
Once PNAS has processed your payment, you will receive an email with an access code and activation instructions. After you receive the email, review the PNAS Online Subscription Agreement. By activating your subscription, you agree to all subscription agreement terms and conditions. If you cannot locate the activation email with your access code, please contact PNAS Subscriptions directly.
Do I need to activate my subscription again if I renew?
You do not need to repeat the activation process if renewing an active subscription. The system will extend your subscription’s expiration date after your renewal payment is processed.
Will I receive a password? May I share my password with others, or is use limited solely to me?
If you are not an NAS member and you are starting a new individual subscription, you will receive activation instructions via email after PNAS processes your payment. You will receive an access code to activate your account, and you will be prompted to create a username and a password. Activation is a one-time process for new subscribers, and you will retain the same login credentials year to year. You are the only one licensed to use your login credentials; please keep them confidential.
Who from my institution can access PNAS?
A site license permits unlimited simultaneous Internet access to PNAS by authorized users generally at one location (the employees, faculty, staff, and students officially associated with the subscriber, and authorized patrons of the subscriber's library facilities that are administered from the subscriber's site or campus) through the use of the institution's IP address. Authenticated and authorized users may access PNAS from other locations (e.g., through dial-in, telnet, etc.). For institutional subscribers, there are no usernames or passwords to remember, and there is no limit on the number of users from your institution who may access PNAS simultaneously.
If our PNAS subscription expires and we reinstate our subscription later, will we have access to all available years of the electronic edition?
While you have a paid and activated subscription to PNAS, you will have access to all content in the electronic database. When your subscription expires, you will still have access to free back issues (all PNAS content is free after 6 months).
PNAS does not officially offer perpetual access. However, cancelled subscribers will eventually regain access to recent articles 6 months after their publication dates.
As an individual subscriber or NAS member, how do I log in with my account?
Please visit our login page. If you forgot your password or want to change your password, you can manage your password or contact PNAS for assistance.
As my institution's administrator, how do I update our account and/or view usage statistics?
Please visit our Librarian Portal for full information about administrator access.
How do I cancel my subscription?
Cancellations must be received by April 30. Please allow 6 weeks for processing your request. Refunds will be issued for the unused portion of the subscription. All refunds may be subject to a $25 processing fee. Send cancellation or refund requests to the contact information at the bottom of this webpage.
